Apparatus Accidents

I’m in the middle of coordinating a local recruit training academy. This week happens to be the emergency vehicle driving section of the program. As is typical, I conducted my search online for apparatus and POV accidents to use as examples for the program. And again as typical, it was distressing (and slightly embarrassing) to see the number and severity of apparatus accidents since my last driver training just six months ago.

I don’t want to single out any particular incident or department here but I think it is worthwhile to see what’s been happening in the fire service. Feel free to Google or YouTube fire truck accident/crash and see what’s out there. It’s important for us to see this and share it with our personnel.

As a side note, the IAFF has released a report and training program related to emergency vehicle driving. While it is specifically focused on the career fire service, I think it is still a good resource for the fire service as a whole. If you’re interested, you can view the report and training program (including an instructor guide and participant manual) here. The powerpoint file can be found here.
