Escaping our silo

Sometimes, the world works in mysterious ways. Just a few weeks ago I was looking for something random in Google (the exact topic was so unimportant that it slips my mind). Somehow in the process, I managed to stumble onto a goldmine of training information.

As a fire service training officer, I’m always looking for good information and resources to make our work more effective. For the most part, this quest for information was focused within the fire service resource sites. While good, these resources weren’t exactly what I needed. I wanted something with more appeal and proven effectiveness from an outside perspective.

That’s when I happened upon the American Society of Training and Development (www.ASTD.org). While on the site, I picked a book from their extensive training library called “Evidence-Based Training Methods: A guide for training professionals.” I’m just about to finish it up and you can be sure that when I do I’ll give you a full review.

The site had enough information and potential for me to sign up as a member. While the membership price was a little higher than that of the ISFSI, I expect the benefits from this organization (manpower, resources, and research) will be worth the increase.

If you’re involved in training, this organization is worth a look. And if you’re lucky, they may even have a local chapter in your area.
